- Objectives
This study aimed to investigate the current status of social isolation and seclusion among young adults in Korea and to analyze their association with suicide risk.
Methods
We utilized data from 14 966 young adults aged 19-34 years from the 2022 Survey on the Lives of Young People. Social isolation and seclusion were defined as independent variables, and suicidal ideation within the past year was set as the dependent variable. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to reduce the risk of selection bias, and logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the associations between social isolation, seclusion, and suicidal ideation.
Results
Of the participants, 266 individuals (1.8%) were socially isolated, and 67 individuals (0.5%) were secluded. Associations were observed between social isolation and suicidal ideation (population-weighted adjusted model: odds ratio [OR], 2.43, p=0.003; population-weighted PSM model: OR, 2.03, p=0.037), as well as between seclusion and suicidal ideation (population-weighted adjusted model: OR, 4.15, p=0.004; population-weighted PSM model: OR, 3.87, p=0.010) across all models.
Conclusions
Being socially isolated or secluded is associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation among young adults aged 19-34 years. Preventive policies and tailored support systems are urgently needed to address these risks. This study contributes to the development of specific policies for mitigating social isolation and supporting the reintegration of young adults aged 19-34 years into society.

Key Message
Using data from the 2022 Survey on the Lives of Young People, this study demonstrates that young adults (aged 19-34) in Korea experiencing social isolation or seclusion face a significantly increased risk of suicidal ideation. These findings identify socially isolated and secluded young people as a critical high-risk group for suicide. This underscores the urgent need for proactive public health policies and tailored support systems to prevent suicide by addressing social isolation and seclusion and promoting societal reintegration among this vulnerable population.

- OBJECTIVES
The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), a multicenter-based multi-cohort study, has collected information on body composition using two different bioelectrical impedence analysis (BIA) machines. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility of whether the test values measured from different BIA machines can be integrated through statistical adjustment algorithm under excellent inter-rater reliability. METHODS: We selected two centers to measure inter-rater reliability of the two BIA machines. We set up the two machines side by side and measured subjects' body compositions between October 2007 and December 2007. Duplicated test values of 848 subjects were collected. Pearson and intra-class correlation coefficients for inter-rater reliability were estimated using results from the two machines. To detect the feasibility for data integration, we constructed statistical compensation models using linear regression models with residual analysis and R-square values. RESULTS: All correlation coefficients indicated excellent reliability except mineral mass. However, models using only duplicated body composition values for data integration were not feasible due to relatively low R2 values of 0.8 for mineral mass and target weight. To integrate body composition data, models adjusted for four empirical variables that were age, sex, weight and height were most ideal (all R2>0.9). CONCLUSIONS: The test values measured with the two BIA machines in the KoGES have excellent reliability for the nine body composition values. Based on reliability, values can be integrated through algorithmic statistical adjustment using regression equations that includes age, sex, weight, and height.

Abstract

- OBJECTIVES
To estimate the economic burden of osteoporotic vertebral fracture (VF) from a societal perspective. METHODS: From 2002 to 2004, we identified all National Health Insurance claims records for women > or = 50 years old with a diagnosis of VF. The first 6-months was defined as a "clearance period," Ysuch that patients were considered as incident cases if their first claim of fracture was recorded after June 30, 2002. We only included patients with > or = one claim of a diagnosis of, or prescription for, osteoporosis over 3 years. For each patient, we cumulated the claims amount for the first visit and for the follow-up treatments for 1 year. The hospital charge data from 4 hospitals were investigated to measure the proportion of the non-covered services. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 106 patients from the 4 study sites to measure the out-of-pocket spending outside of hospitals. RESULTS: During 2.5 years, 131,453 VF patients were identified. The patients had an average of 3.38 visits, 0.40 admissions and 6.36 inpatient days. The per capita cost was 1,909,690 Won: 71.5% for direct medical costs, 20.6% for direct non-medical costs and 7.9% for indirect costs. The per capita cost increased with increasing age: 1,848,078 Won for those aged 50-64, 2,084,846 Won for 65-74, 2,129,530 Won for 75-84and 2,121,492 Won for those above 84. CONCLUSIONS: Exploring the economic burden of osteoporotic VF is expected to motivate to adopt effective treatment options for osteoporosis in order to prevent the incidence of fracture and the consequent costs.
